Week no. 6 - Creative Commons

Visited the Creative Commons website, watched a couple of videos and learnt that I could allow other people to use my work posted on the internet - drawings, written stuff, music, photographs, etc. Instead of having all rights reserved, I could allow for some rights reserved, so that other people can use what I have created to some extent. It would have been tiresome for people to get my permission to do, so to get round this, Creative Commons allows for permission to be granted. This is what collaboration is about in the digital age - other people can build on your work readily and make it even better. Best of all, you can get the licences FOC. This site also allows you to search for other people's work which is licenced with Creative Commons, so you can use them.

These are the various types of licences available:

License Conditions
Creators choose a set of conditions they wish to apply to their work.

Attribution
You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform your copyrighted work — and derivative works based upon it — but only if they give credit the way you request.

Share Alike
You allow others to distribute derivative works only under a license identical to the license that governs your work.

Noncommercial
You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform your work — and derivative works based upon it — but for noncommercial purposes only.

No Derivative Works
You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform only verbatim copies of your work, not derivative works based upon it.

Week no. 6 - Technorati

You can register your blog on Technorati officially, and then you can tag your blog posts, videos, pictures so that others can find the stuff on your blog. Chances are if you are blogging about an area of interest, and you want to share this with others, then Technorati provides the tools to do so. But if you are bloggin like you are writing stuff in your diary then this is probably not for you. Apparently the Authority no. shows how many people have linked their own blogs to yours, so the higher the number, the more highly ranked your blog is.

Even if you are not a member, you can always go to Technoratti to do a blog search or alternatively, you can do a blog search on google at http://blogsearch.goggle.com

One question I have is this - what exactly are "blog reactions"? Are people writing their comments to other people's blog posts?

Week no. 6 - Del.icio.us

This internet tool allows people to bookmark webpages they find useful and organise them with tags (multiple tags allowed too) so that you can know which websites you have bookmarked for a particular area of interest. You can also write comments on these websites so that at a glance other users can decide whether they want to click on the link and read on.

This is certainly more useful than the usual favorites list in IE, where the list is all jumbled up, in no particular category. Also, you can gain access to websites bookmarked by others by typing in a tag or do a search by typing in key words. Now with Deliciou, you won't need to have your own computer to access your favourite bookmarks, but you just need to sign in to your Delicious account and access them from anywhere.

I have created a Delicious account and saved a few bookmarks (a couple of popular ones which with camera reviews, courtesy of busband) and tagged them with "cameras" and "photography". Funny thing is that when I tried to do search of the Nikon D3 camera by selecting "My bookmarks", nothing was thrown up. Hmmmm...... not sure what went wrong, but lots of information was available under "Everybody's bookmarks". Any comments, anyone?

Here's the link to the website:
http://delicious.com/

To see how other people have tagged a particular website, clikc on Bookmark tab, and the "go to URL". Once URL is keyed in, you will see the nol of times it has been taqgged. Then you can decide to "Save a new bookmark"

If you are already certain that you want to tag a website, then go straight to "Save a new bookmark"

Also, you could subscribe to a tag, say on hamsters, and what people have taqged wil be provided in a listing for your reference.

Ah, one more interesting bit, you can also send these bookmarked pages to other users,(you must add them to your network/group first; will need their user name to do this) or other people can send you something too. You will need to retrieve the bookmarks from an inbox, much like email.

Still on Week 5 - the Rollyo

Found this tool to be pretty interesting and useful. Helpful if you know which are the freqently used websites for a certain topic or area of interest and you just narrow your search to just those websites, instead of trawling the entire web for information.

Quite a nifty website really, as you can personalise it and decide on which are your areas of interest (e.g. reference, online shopping, which are already there) and then add your own search engines. To create a link to the search roll, you have to make it available to the public. You can also add other people's search rolls to your home page and use them. To see what other search rolls there are, just click on explore right on top, and then you can see the websites linked to that search, and just click on add to my Rollyo.

I have created this one to narrow down searches on the Singapore economy at this link:

This will be a useful tool to put on Mel for the students when they do their newspaper aricle assignment for MIEC :)

Week 5 Web 2.0 Awards List

I decided to explore the first-placed website under the Food category in the shortlist provided. Am amazed at the wide array of videos that people have actually uploaded on the web and shared with others.

Here's the link ---- http://www.imcooked.com

I was trying to embedd the video link here, but an error message kept throwing up! I wanted to show how everyone could make apple pie. Did anyone else try to put in the video in their blog?

You can try this other one - lots of useful documents in there for downloading if you want to. Found this bible reading plan here:/> Bible Reading Plan - Get more Business Documents

This will help me keep tab of my reading of God's word, and more importantly reflecting on it and applying it to my daily life, at home and in the workplace.

Here's something on writing business plans... a sample report for thought:

/> plan on how to start a small business - Get more Business Documents

Here's the website to explore the other stuff in there. Will need to register as a member, and then download the documents into the folders you have created under your account name.

Week no.5 on image generators

Took a one week break with my family in Brisbane and got home just last evening.

Got to get on with class room learning 2.0. Tried out the first tool listed and created my first motivational poster using a beautiful shot of a waterfall.

It's really easy - just upload the photo to this website and then save a copy of the poster to your hard disk when it's done. And to have it posted on this blog, just do a new post and attach an image to have it posted on the blog.

Here's the link to this really useful tool - http://bighugelabs.com/flickr/motivator.php

Week no. whatever (RSS feeds)

I had great fun this morning - discovering all kinds of gadgets on blogger (Thanks for sharing your tips, Paul)

I have added some of these gadgets to my blog - links to the Straits Times and Crunchy Roll, A quote of the day thingy, picture of the day from National Geographic,etc...

Am still not quite sure what these RSS feeds do...... it helps me to read all the latest updates from a website(s) at a go from Google Reader? Maybe, I should be really careful as to what kinds of news I want to follow... I 've got lots of items from 2 news websites that I subscribed to.

11 Jan 09
Hey.... did a relook at RSS feeds this morning, went to the Straits Times Interactive and clicked on the RSS icon. When you subscribe to a particular feed (e.g news from the Money Desk), that's going to appear as a feed in IE under the My Favourites (STAR) icon. A good way to have the news (those which matter) brought to you once you log on to the net. Alternatively once you click on the feed, you can cut and paste the URL to Google reader, and read all your news there from your blog. :)
